Bundi is two hundred kilometres from Jaipur and gets a fraction of the visitors. The palace above the town has murals that Rudyard Kipling called the work of goblins rather than men, and on most mornings you will have them to yourself.
The stepwells
There are more than fifty in the town. Raniji ki Baori is the big one — forty-six metres down, carved the whole way. The others are unmarked, down side lanes, and finding them is the afternoon.
Fitting it in
Bundi works as an overnight between Jaipur and Udaipur, which is otherwise a long single day in the car. Add Chittorgarh the next morning and the drive stops being a drive.
